Good
Designers Redesign, Great Designers Realign by Cameron Moll
“It was almost immediately following the release of iLife ’05
that the idea for this article was spawned. Something clicked. The new
iLife packaging wasn’t just a redesign for the sake of redesigning.
It seemed to represent much more than that. Personal computing was no
longer something done to accomplish something else more efficiently,
but rather a part of everyday life, even critical to communication and
social interaction.”

British
Design Innovation (BDI) launches new
report on the practise of pitching in UK-based design agencies.
“In a new report launched on 7 November 2005, following research
undertaken with over 200 UK-based design agencies, it has been confirmed
that free pitching is still rife among clients and agencies and is costing
the UK design sector 100 000s in pounds sterling in non-recoverable costs
and an average of 12% loss of man hours per annum.
25% of projects/tenders pitched for are not awarded after the pitch
process.
63% of agencies claim to have experienced this decision.”

“The (next) looming crisis for Australia’s film and TV industry
is self evident - except to those in the business itself who are still
in denial. Audiences are no longer a mass, but a million-fold audience
of just one, and taking control of the consumption of content.”

Though article is specific to the Australian market, some facts imo,
hint to parallel situations across other markets.
Ric
Stultz is an illustrator with a unique doodling like style with
fatty characters drawn within usually high contrasting and intersecting
layouts.
He just released a small plaquette titled the Babble Box. I
was curious on how he would stich a story together. The moment I opened
it - read through non-stop, granted there are not many pages, but I was
drawn in and sometimes deeply moved by the thoughts accompanying the
illos.
Encourage the artist and turn your copy into a collector item.

Hey, I'm trying to locate individuals who are regulars of netdiver and
who know the site pretty well (3 years + visiting and almost inside
out). I would like to brainstorm with you ideas for upcoming and exciting
new projects.
If you would like to spare some time with us and by nature, can't miss
an opportunity to give your feedback, drop me a FYE email. Tell me a
bit about you: name, email, passion, profession, absolute expertise,
how long you've been visiting and if you have one, URL to personal site.
Deadline: I'd like to round up a group by Nov 24.

Choices Can Cripple a Website by Nick Usborne
“I admit, it’s a provocative headline. But
it’s true.”
Ann
Kersen
the
complement of space is a well done flash site with an unusual presentation
and visual concept for a furniture designer.
There is a close association implied between people and furniture. Granted
it is a given, we do not live in museums, so any furniture we own serves
a human purpose: utility and / or beauty. Still, as you see this couple
being photographed with each piece, seems to emphasize our aspiring artistic
side for a house beautiful. Each of us in the how and with what we surround
ourselves in our home, is indeed canvassing personal expression of both
intent and mean.
These two set the mood, show targeted audience and influence perception
of style, which I would describe as classic modern. Unique! Beautiful!

Design
Online is an electronic library containing a digitised record of
Design journal for the years 1965 to 1974. Help yourself to a uber
resource!
What perhaps is most striking on first sighting... are the cover snapshots.
Dating way back when graphic work was all hand made (pencil,
lettraset, watercolor, ink, photography, illustration) and won't you
agree... they look stunning and perhaps, even familiar?
In fact, they bear on many aspects lots of similarities with today's
design styles. A direct challenge to reinvent how we communicate with
design?
Can't brush these off as too passé... perhaps even breaching
(all over again) the debate around puter assisted design?
Great designers preceded us and much can be learned from their past
work. Overall humbling. Definitely inspiring. Voiding complacency. Sharpening
focus. Makes me want to work even harder!
Good design survives the test of time!

Have
you heard of the Blinkenlights project?
If not, watch
a video that explains it.
The Teacher's building had 8 floors and windows were painted white with
each, a lamp behind. The matrix was born: 8 x 18. You could design and
upload your designs. You could play PONG in real time. You could text
message love letters. How cool is that?
Did you know that the software to do matrix projections on a public
building is free and was released as open-source? It seems there were
an encore and a couple other locations worldwide, had their own shows.
Actually, if you have the right software installed (mostly provided on
site) you can do emulation projections. To all the VJ out there, something
to look into?
What next? Should this be revived? If you thinks so, contact them.

“A website devoted to objects designed to protect body and mind
from dangerous or stressful circumstances; respond to situations of emergency;
ensure clarity and information; and provide a sense of comfort and security.”
Quite an agenda? Discover singular and out of the box ideas aimed at
survival under extreme conditions. See for yourself the power of ingenuity
as the likes of an 'Undercover table' or a 'Tree tent' and the 'Parka
Air Mattress'...
The website interface looks like a barren horizon with little bumps
where there are little (well ok no) indication on where to click, but
easy enough to find.
This project was designed by OrdinaryKids who as you may guess, are
everything but ordinary (just check their furry team and you'll be convinced).
