“The world is steeped with bad design...”

Part prankster, part provocateur, BadDesignKills, a new site for professional designers, launched this year on January 12 to cajole an industry invaded by $29.95 hack logos and cheap clipart collections. The incendiary yet humorous poke at poor design has dual motives: to make fun of the ignorance and cutrate solutions professionals struggle against, and to generate awareness about the nature of good (and bad) design in the public arena. Created by Von Glitschka.

Splendid! Brian Malloy's opening site picture is a perfect example of what a great photographer can do. Even in black and white, you feel the light and warmth, the quiet happiness and child-like marvelling at nature. That special moment that makes and enrich one's childhood memories.

The words that comes to mind to best describe his style are: high human density.

Non-Design Skills for Designers (as in math, writing, communication) by Kevin Potts

That's original! Diagonally oriented? Why not? I really like the 'philosofish' play on word from Rumblefish (demo reel is awesome) a postprod motion graphics promising shop. Must see!

Standards are great for our industry! Explorations seed the next wave of standards! More than ever, it's time to play.

Lafano is an office separation system company that shows really nice pictures of the assembly partitions possibilities. Well done.

Fresh and cool! You've gotta see Shop Composition, probably the best designed online store so far. With big pictures of items, no doubt you see what you'll get. The dragging device to view more item is genial, keeping your last visited item as background.

Newly refreshed product and portfolios sites:

/ One & Co nice presentation

/ Konstruct / STK check the Frankfurt Airport pitch

/ Teresa Sapey awesome architecture studio

/ Nebojsa Nikolic movement painter

Oh! One's gotta luv this pitch: “It's about taking lemons and making standards-compliant lemonade” by The Weekly Standards

One of the most prolific designer, Xavier Mariscal has litterally his hands in many-many-many projects in his Barcelona studio. From print, interactive projects to furniture and architectural design. Luv the little characters in the loading sequence (which is his trademark illustration signature).

Everything on the site is miniature, but certainly not the talent!

Internet pioneer Vint Cerf signs on with Google by Eric Bangeman (via: ArsTechnica)

“They don't call it the war for talent for nothing... Google has hired Internet pioneer Vint Cerf away from MCI, where he most recently served as senior vice president of technology strategy. He also serves as the chairman of ICANN, the agency charged with overseeing the Internet's domain name registry.”

Stay tuned! The next announcement will be: “All your metas belongs to us”. There was a lot of controversy surrounding ICANN becoming the manager back in the days when much trouble was happening in domain management nirvana.

So really, if Vint Cerf (co-designer of the TCP/IP protocols and the architecture of the Internet) is chairman of an organization (non-profit) and now becomes 'chief evangelist' for a megapoly arising... ain't there some little measure of conflict of interests?

Just discovered Nate Williams (n8w) Illustrationmundo... which says it all right? Don't miss the mini-survey presently ran...mmm... wow I did not know that.

Creative Behavior issues two new articles. Must reads.

3D floorplans and interior environments are the new (design) rage! What do you make of that? Of course, who would not want a house overlooking the ocean... but is it realistic to sell this kind of utopia to sell your goods? From a technical point of view Sony Style (MX) lounge is impressive... but...

The Power of Design by Fast Company

“Look around you: The evidence of design's power is everywhere. It's apparent in the mere fact that the bar has been raised. Customers expect, even demand, more from the design of everything they buy...”

ndle1: Netdiver started publishing links to articles from ALA way back, in the early days. The vintage mini anim (as shown) is still in useage across the news archive, a couple of screenshots are still there for aticles that have relevancy even today.

A List Apart site was part of the Best of the Year 2002 list.

Fresh out! If you're freelancing or considering doing so, Kevin Airgid just put out in a neat little book his over a decade worth of experience working solo. The topic covers what I call, a need rarely catered to: the business side of (web) design. To me, as far as I'm concerned, these hands-on pearls are valuable to all disciplines that require, at one time or another, you being da man (or woman) of the situation.

It's a fast read. I blasted through from cover to cover in a mere couple hours. Now the book looks like neon bar coded because of the sooo many highlighted stuff. Weither you are a rookie or an experienced roadie, weither you need to get (finally) confirmation over some of the things you thought right (and were not sure of) or weither past judgment errors (man these hurt) still affect your self-confidence or you need a reality check to pursue the path to success or would like to learn about cheap workarounds and pitfalls to really really avoid or you just want the url to snatch goodies, there is enough substance in the Web Designer's Success Guide to make it your best investment this year!

Download a chapter for free or just buy it baby!

One of the most prolific photograph I know (almost 5,000 photos in total), Rion has been going strong for many years. Catch a glimpse of her vision. Her site has been listed on netdiver for many years, and only now, do I discover that she is a woman!

In fact, she contacted me and I deem it important to publish this excerpt “...since the male-to-female photoblogger ratio is rather unbalanced (especially in NYC), I feel it's particularly important to let you know that I'm a woman, not a man... it would mean a lot to me if that could be corrected. there's just not enough female representation around!”

Wow, she rocks! It's never too late to welcome a new powagirrrl!!!

Robert Moog died this last weekend, due to a brain tumor. I don't think we have any idea of how much music involves 'The Moog' synthesizer. But we sure know the impact he had on contemporary music. He will be missed. (via Mau)

The directories are reopened! Galleries are being revisited and when relevent, thumbnails refreshed. So there's no such thing as being 'old' news on Netdiver. You were picked because of your talent then, you're still thriving, you're staying because you're still at it!

ndle1: In fact, this short reminds me of MARLA filmed using a homemade custom camera (MINI35 kit based around a Nikon F-2 and a Canon Gl-2).

She's made a name for herself as one of the first to initiate workshops and books and became a reknowned teacher of interactive design and now, lynda.com acquires the Flashforward Conference and Flash® Film Festival.

Nothing gives me more pleasure than discovering new talent! Mariline Fiori is no excpetion. I like the uniqueness of her illustration signature and the overall sweetness. From France with LUV.

She does this and that! Annette Merrild is a multi-displinarian who succeeds with passion at both medias. Her paintings - which have a collage feel - are charged with details and emotions and in some instance, the color palette is dazzling.

Her photographic experiments, one in particular called The Room Project, is based on visiting neighbors appartments to get to know the world around you. To be visited from top to bottom. From Denmark with LUV.

Pirated Sites welcomes you to the newness! The old site is busted and now forums have been installed to post your rips, or show off originals. You can get authentic feedback for the first time ever!

netdiver.com -> shame on them! Squatting our (first) domain for many years, the trail leads to this Slashdot member and to this registrar asking for a ripping price to give it back?
