Brace
yourself, you are about to discover some pretty stunning facts and morsels,
that as designers, we should definitely keep in mind. These two Sappi
pdf brochures... Life
with Print - Europe / 2004 and Life
with Print - North America / 2004 contain information about the value
of printed media and they make a pretty good case at it.
_ _ _ _ _ _
ndle1: Power
of Print - Southern Africa graphs are not legible but still worthy
if you put the efforts to decipher them.

For example: Which medium contains information you are most interested
in?
- Radio -> 8%
- Internet -> 24%
- TV -> 30%
- Newspaper -> 36%
- Magazines -> 45%
Another example: Where does advertising shine better?
- Internet -> 6%
- Cable TV -> 16%
- Network TV -> 34%
- Magazines -> 44%

Don't forget to view the short ad
campaign which offers other pretty smart arguments, as the excerpt
below shows:
“How can something that does not move be so moving?
How can something that makes no sound say so much? That's the power of
print.”
When
was the last time you visited the Toolbox?
Did you know there are fonts, image stocks, design references and magazines
listed in the Designers' directory?
Designboom
makes a nice tribute to Stefan
Diez an industrial designer who specializes in unusual material and
new adaptations of home wares.

Now
that should keep us busy for a couple of hours. A complementing article
is available on Direct
Mail in the Media Mix by Craig Halgreen who is Sappi's corporate
and marketing communications manager.

Have
time? Take the UDid:
Universal Design Identity Survey. The Universal Design Identity program
(UDid for short) is a research project that is being conducted by Alex
Bitterman and Beth Tauke at the Center for Inclusive Design at the University
at Buffalo.

Cheekysweetgraphics...
that's quite a domain name. Guess what? It delivers just that! Awesome
talent. If his imagination could be cloned, as designers, we could use
some of his infusion. Thibault Choquel is looking for freelance work
and good collaborations.

Jory
Kruspe and I have been exchanging for the past year or so, in ref
with projects he was involved with... yet - he had no website of his
own... this has changed! I just soooo luv the concept! Simple and perfect
execution.

Choosing
the right paper is already a task. How about including an environmentally
safe paper as well? Here is a matrix provided
by Celery Design.
I
don't know if Graphicdefine will
ever be anything more than my own space to document my experiences in
the business of graphic design says Daniel Schutzsmith, business manager
of the well-known Chopping Block (who
happens to have a couple of job openings right now).

ndle1:
I have had this discussion with others, and true, the business side
of design should be more covered. Some delicious wholegrain tidbits mixed
with a healthy sense of humor to consume with a grain of salt! Interestingly
his recommended books are the same that I have/am reading!
Two
Brains Are Better than One - Viva la (cognitive) difference! by
Debra Wierenga
“Earlier this year the president of Harvard University got into
a great deal of trouble when
he suggested--at a conference on women and minorities in the science
and engineering workforce--that intrinsic aptitude differences might
be one reason fewer women than men advance to the highest levels in science-
and math-related careers... I wonder why there aren't more female winners
of Nobel science prizes--or more female members of corporate boards or
writers of op-ed pieces...
Baron-Cohen makes the case quite succinctly: The female
brain is predominantly hard-wired for empathy. The male brain is predominantly
hard-wired for understanding and building systems... Some women have
better spatial skills than some men, and some men are more empathetic
than some women... Our brains may be hardwired for some things, but they
are also highly programable, continually making new connections in response
to environmental stimuli.”
Now
that's a brillant idea! Spread the word across a couple of educational
institutions, get the related departments to collaborate and voila! Dizine (launching
issue) is designed by students for students! Isn't what learning is about?
The grid is splendid with floating left nav and semi-transparency...
they've done their homeworks (sic)!

This
is the site of a Hungarian bookeeper office. True, there isn't a domain
name for this company, but every partners and people know Rutin96.
Well bookeepers never had it so good. Clean - clean - clean interface.

Visual
metaphors have been used quite often in different sites this year. Meaning,
when attempts to create and reproduce a tentative unreal/real world become
the interface; some holds surprising interactive actions. Some are better
than others... this one has some really interesting features.
For example on the first screen, click the clock and wait a couple of
seconds to see what happens on Frontage.

Heavy
Backpack is proud to present the premier release of Motion+61.
Included on this convention breaking DVD is a collection of work from
some of today’s leading creative talent in broadcast, motion graphics,
animation, film and effects; all working in the Australian industry.
Each piece under 10 minutes, and each perfectly constructed to captivate
the imagination.
This
is a hard to describe impression this site has made upon me. Metal Shadows
which could hint at a film or theatre/dance company is in fact the unique
and original project name of ... a sculptor!!! How does an artist like Nathalie
Lawhead
using
a medium that is possibly one of the hardest to convey on the web did
to splendidly promote her work?
You simply gotta see it.

Hilarious!
Great animation! Take time to chill for a couple of minutes and watch Le

Refreshing
attitude! Upcoming talented with a street smart urban projects oriented
style by eLEVEN18!

She
takes the most delicious photography. Be it by capturing life, kids,
food, decor accessories, portraits all are served with exquisite thoughtfulness.
Ambience and mood reign supreme.
She makes me want to eat, embrace the running kids, sit in the chair,
reflect on beauty. Susanna Marchi
is
at the top of her game, no doubt.

Brillant
concept! Superb work! Must see! The website Camouflage
Comics - made at the Jan van Eyck Academy Maastricht, by Aarnoud
Rommens (1977, Belgium) and Ingrid Stojnic (1976, Croatia / Rekall Design)
- deals with issues of visual narration, censorship, human rights, comics
and remembrance in the context of the Argentine military dictatorship
of 1976-83.
The comics and illustrations featured are all new; they were made between
2002 and 2005.

WellVetted

My pick for this month is Adrian

Upcoming
designer and illustrator Muid Latif has
been involved in the Malay community for a number of years now. Him and
other international designers such as Inksurge, Joshua Davis, TheClickProject,
CreativeBehavior, VektorJunkie, amongst others, were part of a recent
exhibit called Beautiful
Junk; have a look at the available pictures, nice!

There
have been a couple 'wheel' like navigation systems I have seen recently,
like the one proposed by Circulo comes
to mind. IF propose a different
approach of concentric colored circles that change color... I do have
appreciation for the intellectual/logical excercise, still think it is
hard to figure which choice of projects visitors would rather see.
Although there is a drop down menu alternate navigation available -
the connection for interface design choice is hard to make. Worth seeing!

Peepshow v
3 site is now online! This version is a complete departure from prior
versions which were more cartoony and spoofy for this collective of illustrators
and designers. In fact, you cans see a snapshot of version 2 in the BOTY04 (our
annual best of the year short list). Using the slide show concept, not
really an innovation, what can't miss the mark and makes them stand out,
is the sheer staggering quality of the projects represented.
A must see!

Introducing fontkitchen a
new cool foundry. Luv the work and useage of primary color red! Hard
to succeed without being loud - nicely balance with lots of white space.
Nice examples of their fonts useage as well.

FxBalléry is
an industrial designer graduated from the Royal College in London and
now working in Paris. His, a somewhat rebellious approach to ordinary
objects and commercial packages, I find his work lucid, clear cut, beautiful
entertwined with a sense of fun.
Check the Issaye Mikaye products, for example or the VIA project, where
the lamp adjusts in height to create different lighting atmospheres.
Shown here, funky shades.

mobile, domotique, auto, etc.). Cette disparité nuit à la
communication, aussi le développement d’une grammaire iconique
devient essentiel
à la standardisation de cet outil.”
Un
court-métrage de Romain Segaud et Christel Pougeoise. You have
gotta see this short film from: TIM
TOM. Pay special attention to what consists of the characters' main
mean of expression!
Very moving, funny storyboard. Brillant and amazing realization!

Is
it cute? Yes. Is it showing animation skills? In becoming. Is it worth
seing? Definitely. Introducing upcoming new talent and design rookie, Caliboor.

The

Luv the mini-display. Cool!

Irrisistible! Undoboy the

Imagination hits a new record high!

New
WTC tower design made public by Phil Hirschkorn
If you have been following the reconstruction project or are an architect,
this is an interesting article about the whys in ref with the new tweakings
done to the original design. Even more interesting is the fact that although
the site will be completed in 2010, apart from the Governor and Port
Authority, nobody has manifested interest in moving in...
Are you surprised about that?

Another
interesting and mini-minimalist site for an illustrator's portfolio: T.Sutta uses
cut out like technique. I like the the one pixel lines that animates
behind the work.
Strong sense of model / subject personality.

Oh!
From the maker of the recently posted Steve Jobs Ts comes SKWAT

Props

Interestingly Focusart plays
the part! Makes you wonder if the artist is either very young or has
chosen to keep early childhood drawing style to make it his signature.

go Wi-Fi to a fraction of the costs of deployment - thus, challenging
North America stucked with land lines that will take forever to go

An
enigmatic multi-disciplinarian portfolio, LMP (for Love Money Power)

Chris

OK
I said old is cool! So how about printing notebooks on a Gutenberg press
