“You have to do a little work to find out what we do, admits Coudal. "That was intentional from the beginning in 1999. We do great work and we love to show off our portfolio, but our experience is that assignments are given based on the dynamic between the people involved first, and the actual work you've done for other people second. So we've built our site as a way for a potential client to see what we're all about as people.

Someone here once said: if you're chatting up a girl in a bar, the fi rst thing you don't talk about is the other girls you've dated. And that's how we feel about the portfolio.”

This is really how I envision the promotion and penetration of popular (digital) art. Forget fancy installations go the simple route and post it in a strategic place. The texture collage is an unusual navigation - but hey when you are an artiste some leeway allowed. Hats off Luke Best!

On May 30th, Montreal became the official host city and launched were the ICSID / ICOGRADA / IDA (International Design Alliance) new secretariats. Such endeavor requests the vision, the contribution as well as the collaboration and much efforts from many different individuals who have in common, architecting the future of design. Montreal was part of a 34 city world wide bid! I heard of some interesting projects are brewing - exciting times ahead indeed.

Design is a creative activity whose aim is to establish the multi-faceted qualities of objects, processes, services and their systems in whole life-cycles. Therefore, design is the central factor of innovative humanisation of technologies and the crucial factor of cultural and economic exchange.”

In those days - truly - to be passionate about fonts - was an all hands-on profession! In the days of pre-software design, the sharpness of concept and execution were the make or break ingredients. Out of the sea of fontographers comes a book that celebrates not only a great foundry but one innovative enough to launch what is today - the norm - in branding warfare: launching its own magazine!!!

U&lc (Upper & Lower Case) is all about influencing design and typography as sub-title affirms. This book comprises of an in-depth compilation, in which you recognize instant the similarity of intent - nothing has changed in the ways to promote one's work. Thing is, U&lc did it before everyone else did! They did it smartly. Impressive to see that for a long period of time - it was a no-color publication, reminding me of what a mentor once said: “No color design - means no place to hide conceptual flaws (behind colors).” And that, is something to contend with.

I strongly recommend this book as a reference companion to any font lovers. Personally as a designer - one of my favorite design asset are fonts and to be able to retrieve wisdom and inspiration from this book, makes it invaluable. Not all included designs are going to throw you on the floor nonetheless, what is impressive - is the willingness to continue the journey. It talks about stamina, vision and determination.

Dirty tricks being played in Browser War 2.0 by Jeff Louella

For an inside look at the street art culture which hosts really are amazing work - visit the Wooster Collective. Unfortunately not all is well and some stories turn out bad since breaking the law by installing art over private property is still a reality. It would be great to have an abandoned building taken over and becoming the first street art museum where the exhibits would always in motion, in becoming since it would be done by visiting artists.

Everyone is an artist, everyone can contribute to the evolution of the galleries which retain their ephemeral quality.

What do you think - would that work?
