The
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit on Thursday in
an attempt to overturn key portions of a controversial 1998 copyright
law (DMCA).

*Basic Steganalysis Concepts*:
Steganography is the art of passing information in a manner that the
very existence of the message is unknown. The goal of steganography is
to avoid drawing suspicion to the transmission of a hidden message. If
suspicion is raised, then this goal is defeated. Steganalysis is the
art of discovering and rendering useless such covert messages.

Emotion
& Design: Attractive things work better by Donald Norman
“The usable but ugly critique of The Design of Everyday Things
has merit insofar as usable designs are not necessarily pleasurable ones...
The tensions between aesthetics and usability as well as those between
affect and cognition have long bothered me, but it has not been until
now that I have been able to make progress in bringing these areas together...
To be truly beautiful, wondrous, and pleasurable, the
product has to fulfill a useful function, work well, and be usable and
understandable. Good design means that beauty and usability are in balance.”

Light
at the end of the tunnel? Last year I made a small coverage of the JPEG2000 new
algorithm and innovative compression device. The results I gathered from
some experiments on real heavy files were astounding. I've contacted
the group and will post their replies as soon as I hear from them.
When
you thought that things couldn't get worst: how about JPEGs being licensed
and having to pay royalties??? The latest player to attempt to strangle
the internet???
“Forgent has
the sole and exclusive right to use and license all the claims under
the '672 patent that implement JPEG in all "fields of use... We
wanted to ensure the investment community and the general public are
clear about the terms of our valuable JPEG data compression technology,
one of the many technologies we have in our patent portfolio... products
that use JPEG technology for licensing opportunities.”

Now
what's between you and DMCA (Digital
Millenium Copyright Act)?
For a starter, how about learning that “one cannot put up a site
showing design work one has done for clients without clearing it with
all of the clients beforehand (in addition to the company one has worked
for)?”
Concern voiced by Sam Tomasello.
“The DMCA was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1998.
It looks like a reasonable law, but some particular clauses are not very
well thought out and give content movers unacceptable control over the
market (even though they claim it's to protect the artist). Perhaps it
was deliberate. In any case, many have suffered already and a healthy
movement has developed against it.
If this concerns you, there are ways you can fight back. Anti-DMCA seems
to be a good start.”
